Crowded Podcast - Episode 3

Crowded Podcast - Episode 3

BACKGROUND:
Crowded is a radio show made entirely from audio solicited from workers on the crowdsourcing website, Mechanical Turk. It was commissioned by Rhizome.org in 2009. Each episode will have a theme or a mechanism around which the crowdsourced samples are gathered. This episode is about dream jobs.

ASSIGNMENT:
I need someone to take the collected files (link below) and edit it together into a 25-35 minute show. I would like to use some percentage of all of these intros. The rest of the clips can be edited and mixed together however you see fit.

Also, please note that, just because I have included a clip in the ZIP file doesn't mean it is completely usable. If a clip is unintelligible, please try to clean it up. If you still can't understand what is being said, please don't use it.

Please submit a 5-8 minute sample of how you would handle the editing of the show. A winner will be chosen from this sample and asked to complete the project. The deadline for submissions is March 28. This is supposed to be the February episode, so I am a bit behind on the deadline. If you have any questions or need more material, please contact me.

All submitters will get a link to their site on the Crowded.fm website. The winner will be featured on the site.

NOTE
I hope to get a variety of editors for this show, so if you have won within the last 2 episodes, please do not submit.

I will pre-pay as soon as I get the first submission.

ATTACHMENTS
crowded_jingle.zip
I have attached the intro as a reference, but please do not include it in your submission.

Episode 3a.zip
This is only about half of the total recordings. I will be posting more in the next few days.

intros.zip
These are a few intros from Episode 2. I haven't gathered the ones for Episode 3 yet, so you can use these as placeholders.

INSPIRATION
I am looking for a cross between This American Life and Joe Frank. There should be soft instrumental background music through much of it, but not necessarily all of it. I also like the slightly experimental quality of Radiolab. But this should be subtle - keep the focus on the content, not the effects. (links below)

I did the music in this. I think this is pretty close to what you are looking for, I hope. -Shaz aka Quin Griffin

You might have noticed that the rewards have been going down since episode 1. I know that this work is worth much more than $250. The unfortunate truth is that I am running out of money. I am not making any money at all from this show. In fact, at this point, I am paying for it out of my own pocket - which, I assure you, is an extremely limited pocket. Anyway, I hope some of you might still want to be involved while I look for more funding for the project so that, one day soon, I can offer the amount of reward that this kind of work deserves. And, if there is anything else I can offer in return for a submission, like some of my programming services - please don't hesitate to get in touch. Thanks!

I am adding another $50. Please let me know if you plan on participating so that I can pre-pay. This episode should be much easier than episode 2. The recordings are better, and they aren't as complicated. Pretty straight-forward.

Just want to let you know I'm working on this for ya, I have a lot of other projects going at the same time though so that's why I haven't put a demo up yet. This crowd sourcing thing is pretty neat. I would be interested in some type of exchange depending on what you do and such.

Gonna give you a slightly 'jazzy feel' backing, hope you like it! Working on the final touches. Keep up the good work.

hornblower3 - I think the editing of the intro is a little hard to understand. I do like how you are including multiple voices, but I think cutting them off in mid-sentence is not working. Also, the music is indeed nice and jazzy, but I think it needs to be a little less distracting from the content. Did you have a chance to listen to episode 1 or 2? Also, I think you could put a little more space between the different responses. Spread it out a bit and give them some breathing room.
Thanks so much for your submission!

I like what you have done with the intro, but did you see the 'crowded_jingle.zip' file that I attached? Maybe if you could incorporate what you did (layering the "...dream job..." samples) with the existing jingle, that would be ideal. The editing of the intros is great. Also - I am being very picky about the music, but if you listen to the other episodes, you can hear what kind of music I like. I think the guitar is a bit too much and we need something more ambient and neutral. Also, see what I said to hornblower about spacing out the samples a bit more. I am not worried about making this as short as possible - on the contrary, I would like to stretch it out a bit. Maybe even add some space between sentences.

Thanks very much! you guys rock.

Thank you so much to everyone who submitted. As always, it was a very tough decision and the quality for this episode was very high. Good luck to all of you.
